Short term (water)

In temperate climates humans lose 2-3 litres a day. Imagine how this figure increases when ill or under physical duress. Slogging in the Sahara desert would require you to drink and extra 22 litres of water each day! You start to get dehydrated if you fail to replace just 1-5% of your fluid. And if you lose one tenth of your fluid, you will go into shock and probably die.

Natural sources

Human sources

  • water butts
  • water tanks*
  • reservoirs (visible and invisible)**
  • canals
  • ditches

*Remember that any building is going to have a water system in it. Large buildings will have huge water tanks housed at the highest level.
**In the locality of Finsbury Park there are some fairly sizeable reservoirs used by sailing enthusiasts and wildlife. However, in Finsbury Park itself there are large reservoirs stored underground disguised as football pitches. They are easy to spot because they are extremely large, flat, treeless areas of grass with anonymous looking brick buildings found on the perimeter. Quite a few London parks double as reservoirs.

Apart from fresh rainwater, all water will need to be filtered and purified.

You should also consider ways of cutting down your water loss.
