Here's how you make a solar still to capture water in the soil. You'll need a receptacle, some clear plastic and something to with which to dig.

  • dig a hole with sloping sides
  • place your receptacle in the centre of the hole
  • spread the plastic over the hole
  • seal the edge of the plastic with stones and mud
  • after 24 hours, you can start collecting the water - but filter and purify it before drinking

Plant water
You can also capture the water released naturally by plants in the process of transpiration. Tie a transparent plastic bag around the outside of vegetation, making sure the leaves don't touch the edges. Water will collect in the bottom of the bag.

Salt water
Convert salt water to fresh by boiling it and collecting the steam in cloth and wringing it out.
