Subsistence survival

Anything goes. Trade what needs to be traded to get what you need. But don't burn your bridges. Let someone good at negotiating handle it.

Long-term survival

I would like to use an alternative system of trading as suggested in Ecovillages: A Practical Guide to Sustainable Communities (Jan Martin Bang). My currency would be called something like 'favours' or 'Lovelock pounds'.

  1. Create directory of goods/services and vendors.
  2. Have someone in charge tracking transactions.
  3. People contact seller, agree price, take goods/service.
  4. Monthly statement showing people's balance.
  5. Set credit and debit limits.

My husband and I recently joined the North London LETS trading scheme. LETS stands for "Local Exchange Trading Scheme" and it uses the process listed above. I was surprised to discover my other half is prepared to pay the same hourly rate for someone to explain existentialism to him as he would charge as an IT consultant. Just goes to show that one person's wasted degree is someone else's essential knowledge. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it works out.
